A guy reads Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (2009-2011)

Taylor Lautner Will Play Jacob Black In New Moon

No more worries Taylor Lautner fans: Stephenie has just confirmed that he will be returning as Jacob Black in the New Moon movie.

I’m very happy to announce that Taylor Lautner will be playing Jacob Black in New Moon and that he’s doing so with the enthusiastic support of Summit Entertainment, the producers, and Stephenie Meyer.

The characters in Stephenie’s books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance; so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series. But it was my first instinct that Taylor was, is, and should be Jacob, and that the books would be best served by the actor who is emotionally right for the part. I think that fans of Twilight the book and the movie will be surprised by the Jacob Black that Taylor will bring to the screen in New Moon; and I’m looking forward to working with him and the rest of the cast in realizing the film.

very best

Chris Weitz

Read about it here and then tell me what you think! Will he do a good job with the larger role?

  1. YAY!!!!!!! I’ve been waiting all week to find out, because I heard the decision was going to be made around this time. Thanks Kaleb for posting this.

I’m gleefully jumping up and down with happiness right now! 🙂 Taylor is the only Jacob Black there is. He deserves the role.

Yay! Now I’m going to go leave screaming, wild phone messages for my friends.

  2. Meh. I didn’t like his performance at all in the first movie. Since I saw the movie before reading the books.. I was already moderately annoyed with his character. Reading the series further frustrated me.

Jacob is supposedly nearly seven feet tall at the end of his growth. He is also supposed to be very bulky and pardon my language but.. bad ass. Taylor Lautner is a baby faced little kid. Bets on Edward vs Jacob? Edward hands down.

  3. man i’m a bit surprised they decided to keep him. but i’m glad as well. its nice for him! yay. though how ARE they going to make him bigger? lol i can’t wait to find out.

  4. I’ve been so attached to the internet in the past weeks waiting to find out if Taylor would play Jacob or not. I’m so excited that he is! I think Taylor did a great job with Twilight and you can really tell that he cares so much about his part and portraying it as well as he can. He may not be exactly like the Jacob we all imagined springing up to 7 ft tall in New Moon but it’ll be interesting to see what he and Chris Weitz do to make him seem that big.

I feel weird talking so much Jacob love, as I am entirely team Edward but in my second reading of New Moon I learned to appreciate Jacob so much more after I’d calmed down from the agony of Edward leaving haha. I’m excited to see what Taylor can do, despite the obstacles he faces with his physique.

  5. i liked his performance in the first movie, and i disagree with the person who said jacob was supposed to be a badass. he always came off as this very warm happy-go-lucky guy until bella “broke” him. i think taylor can portray this. however, the use of the word “surprised” in the letter from the director makes me anxious

  6. I think he can pull it off. It’s the movies, after all – and if they give New Moon a bigger budget than Twilight, maybe we’ll see some better makeup and special effects. If you think of Elijah Wood becoming a 4ft hobbit, or Robbie Coltrane as huge Hagrid, it isn’t such a stretch (pardon the pun) to think of Jacob as growing. At least, that is what I’m telling myself. (Fingers crossed.)

  7. I’m pretty happy about this because, he really isn’t supposed to be bad-tempered until after he becomes a werewolf, so his go-lucky nature is still needed until then.
Besides I thought that in the book, his growing was over a peirod of time, so I don’t think he would need to grow all that quick. That’s just me. =D And I like him a lot in the first movie even though he was barly in it.

  8. Yay for Taylor!!! WOOO!!!! I heard that he already packed on 19 pounds (though he is not supposed to untill later, buuuttt you cant get everything!) so he has the buffed out thing going. I am a little worried about the hight, but if they cant, they cant. I wouldnt have been tragically upset if the new person would have been a better fit, however I love Taylor, and am SUPER excited he will play Jacob! CONGRATZ!

  9. Abby, I think that when he said “surprised,” he meant that his acting would be very good. Or different than what we expected, but still good. I hope that’s what he meant.

  10. Wooo! Thank god taylor is staying as jacob! Thats the best news ever!! I think ge will be the perfect jacob 🙂

  11. well either way i would have been happy.
taylor isn’t really known as the one and only jacob because in the first twilight movie he didn’t have a huge role to play.. not like edward or bella.

if taylor had played the part of jake in new moon the situation would be different because jacob is such a distinct character that it would be hard to not think of his face while reading the book or watching the next movie.. such as robert pattinson who plays edward- it would be extremly difficult to have rob play edward in the first movie but to not have him in the secound..
rob will forever be known as edward, just as taylor will forever be known as jake if he acts in the secound movie.

  12. omg! hambricullenation! i love your name!!!
and OMG XD I LOVE SUMMIT NOW! AND TAYLOR! =]

  13. Finally Summit did something right! They’ve been getting on my nerves recently, especially with having Rob drop out of “Parts Per Billion” to focus on “New Moon” when he’s not even supposed to be present most of the time. Oh well, I don’t know the whole story, but nevertheless, I wasn’t pleased. Anyway, I’m just happy Taylor’s coming back to reprise his role as Jacob. He’s one of the reasons Jacob finally grew on me as a character. I was (and still am) completely Team Edward/Rob all the way, but I have a soft spot for Taylor now that I just can’t ignore. 🙂 Yay Taylor!

  14. OMG I LUV TWILIGHTITS SO CUTE MY FAVORITE PART IS WHEN THEY KISS IN HER BED THEY SHOULD GO OUT N REAL LIFE THERE SO HOT 2GETHER TAYLOR IS HOT ROB IS HOT N CARLISLE I CANT WAIT 4 NEWMOON

  15. I use 2 think edward(rob) was like so eww (im so srry rob) but when i saw da movie n i saw da way he treated her he became hot reall fast !!!!when u c a guy like dat u want 2 find some 1 who will treat u like that and say hi 2 u everyday n u wld sit 2gether n talk n kiss on ur bed like they did
    P.S. cant wait 4 NEWMOON~!~!~!~!~!

  16. yay this is like one of the best birthday presents ever! i’m so glad that taylor is going to be jacob instead of michael copon (ugh!) haha =P

  17. YAY!!! I am SO SO SO happy for Taylor and excited! He is a wonderful guy/actor and he SO deserves to be Jacob! *squeals*

  18. I think Taylor has the ability to pull this role off. I can definitely see why this was such a difficult decision to make. There’s the Jacob fans who love Jacob for his character and personality in the books. The director needs to stay true to the books. And then there are the Team Taylor, for whom Taylor IS Jacob- it’s just that simple. And it’s always hard changing actors right after the first movie. I’m one of both and I could practically feel myself ripping into two sides because I couldn’t choose. (Haha I felt like Kaleb when he wasn’t sure where to put his loyalties for the NY Times bestseller list.) It’s a hard decision. Even I can admit that, though I was desperately cheering Taylor on.

However, I was close to going on strike when I heard the rumors about Michael Copon. I’m pretty sure that I would not have even gone to see the movie. New Moon is my favorite book and Jake is my favorite character and I don’t want that ruined for me. I would have gone for Steven Strait. He’s a good older Jake. But Copon? He’s white… and has weird spiky hair… And is so not nearly as hot and sweet as Taylor. But I may be biased.

  19. OMG! I love Taylor Lautner as Jake. I can’t wait to see how he portrays Jacob in New Moon. Seems like a pretty hard role to fit… Taylor fits my image of Jake to a T… He’s just slightly shorter. lol.

  20. OME hurrah for Taylor Lautner! I’m a hardcore Team Jacobite and was very impressed with Taylor’s performance in Twilight (although let’s face it, he really didn’t get all that much to do… can’t wait for ten zillion times more Jacob screentime in New Moon!).

From all accounts, Taylor seems to be a really hardworking, mature actor, who researches his roles well and then puts all his effort into performing them impeccably. The amount of work he had to do to fight for this part (he’s already buffed up by 10 pounds… as opposed to RPattz, who was too lazy to get a 6-pack for his shirtless scene in Twilight lol) is incredible and I’m unbelievably stoked that it’s paid off. I’m joining Ashley Greene and the rest of the Twilight cast in congratulating Taylor for this awesome achievement! Now if only he’d leave Renesmee and come imprint on me… 😛

    Love you Taylor 😀

  21. Oh and I forgot to add… thank GOODNESS Summit didn’t take on that idiot Michael Copon. After insulting Taylor for his performance in Twilight, there was no WAY that git was going to play smiley sweetheart Jacob (my fave character in the series). Two thumbs up for Summit, for keeping the best and nicest Jacob in the series. (I have no comment about Steven Strait other than WOW what a hottie! But Jacob has been Taylor’s from the start :D)

  22. I am soooo Happy Taylor Will Be Jacob!
I’ve Been Making Vids in Support of Him & I’m Just Exstatic He Was Able to Keep the Part.
I Think He’s Perfect For Jacob. Hot, Warm Smile, Age, and His Determination & Drive is Just Amazing. And Taylor Just IS Jacob Black.
I Cannot Wait to See How He Does in New Moon.
    Congratulations Taylor. We Love You.
    Team Taylor~

  23. Good for Taylor – I’m happy they’ve kept him as Jacob Black. I’m confident he’ll be able to pull off the moodier Jacob Black – and he’ll look so much better without the wig.

As for the height thing, there’s plenty of examples where it’s been fixed in the past – eg. Ian McKellan (Gandalf) isn’t really that much taller than Elijah Wood (Frodo).

  24. YEAH!! im so happy i have been waiting to find out if he was going to play Jacob or not! Im sooooooo glad that he is i think he will do an amazing job in new moon :]

  25. Fantastic. FANTASTIC! I am thrilled

Steph wants him and thats gold to me. I dont think it matters what anyone else thinks, if Steph pushed for him, thats all that matters. She thinks he’s the best to play Jacob

  26. OMG!!!!!!!! YEA!!!!!!!!
I am so Excited! I was so upset when they announced he might not be able to do the part for new moon. I was devistated that some even went so far as to suggest other actors! But alas, my devistation is no more!
    TAYLOR is playing JACOB.
If everything else in this week is screwed up, that just made it better.
    Did I mention I’m glad? I am.

  27. Hah, my dad and I were just talking about this last night! (Yes, my dad reads Twilight…and I took him to see the movie this past Saturday.) We were both in agreement that Taylor Lautner was a good choice for pre-werewolf Jacob, but we were unsure as to how he would work out from New Moon on. But if Stephenie thinks he’s the best fit for the role, then I’m okay with it. It’ll be interesting to see how they do the growth spurt and all. And the wolves, when they show up in the meadow. And NO MORE NASTY wig, w00t!

  28. YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i just started screaming, im so happy 😀

  29. I am extremely happy Taylor got the part. I had read the series four times previous to the movie, and after I saw the movie, I relized that Taylor is, in fact, Jacob Black. When i had found out he might get the boot, I was extremely upset. I checked the news everyday, and was rooting for him. I am so proud of him! I agree with Alissa about Rpattz. Taylor is just very dedicated to what he does!

Thanks so much Kaleb for posting this, now I will get to sleep peacefully tonight!

  30. I am so pleased that they are keeping Taylor as Jake.
I absolutely HATE when “they” change actors for characters b/w movies. It’s annoying.
And Taylor seems so dedicated to the part, you just know he’s going to give it his all.
I can’t wait to see it.

  31. I never doubted him. When they announced New Moon was gonna be made, the first thing I said was “Yes! I get to see Taylor Lautner with no shirt fer like the rest of the series!” And when they said they were gonna replace him, I just looked at everyone and said “No, they won’t. Too many people will boycott it and the movie will fail.”
    And guess what?

    I WAS RIGHT! ! ! 😀

  32. Oh, I forgot to say something.

Micheal is a Co(u)pon. He gets you 10% off all yer purchases if used before March fifth.

Only REAL actors can play Jacob. The immature was can go work at Target.

  33. I don’t have any particular issues with Taylor Lautner as Jacob in the movie Twilight, just the character of Jacob. I’ve been accustomed to his face now, after all this buildup and I think that I’ve melded my picture of Jacob around the actor.

But, never, did I expect him to hold onto the role. He doesn’t look like Jacob, to me. But then, this is a book and we are all free to interpret characters as we see fit. So I understand that he might be perfect for someone else.

I’m glad he got chosen because I like the consistency it will provide throughout the novels, but I am worried about how he will do. I do think he brings that boyish charm, happy-go-lucky, killer smile that Jacob always has to the part, but I just hope he can grow up a bit as well.

Steven Strait was my personal pick.

  34. He did an okay job as Jacob, he was definitely on my “Not-the-Right-Actor-for-the-Character” list (which was surprisingly short for this movie – approx. 4-5 actors out of the whole cast) but it was kinda hard for me to forget the whole sharkboy thing (which i know I’m not supposed to focus on, but i just can’t help it!) I am glad that they are keeping continuity with the films (much in the fashion of Harry Potter) but he was not my favorite jacob, i’m hoping now that the actors have a bit more experience they will perform better in their roles.

  35. I think Taylor will do an amazing job playing Jacob in the new movie. He just a character that someone can get very attached to and threw various interviews and descriptions from other cast members of the films Taylor seems to have as much as the same personality as Jacob as in his own. I’m very glad to hear that Taylor can keep his role in the movie. Well done to him. 🙂

  36. YAY! I’m so happy for him! He is completely passionate about the series and was so excited to do the future movies. The cast is such a family and I didn’t want Taylor to be ripped out of it when he fit in so well. All of the other actors wanted to keep him. And the other guy they were considering, Michael Copon, was completely arrogant about the whole thing. He was just an awful, awful person. I would tell you to go read the interview, but since Taylor is cast, it doesn’t matter! =)

  37. I’m glad they kept him b/c they chose him in the first place. I’ve read that he’s been working hard to keep the role and I respect that. I still have some reservations but did about Rob Pattinson at first too. Those turned out to be totally unfounded! What do I know? 😉 However, I do feel that Taylor would have made an AWESOME Seth.

  38. I’m just a little disappointed. I don’t really love Taylor Lautner, but I hope he does well in New Moon. Also, I agree with HeyJoyous, Taylor would make a WAY better Seth than he would Jacob. I was kind of hoping for Steven Strait…

On a different subject, is Ben Barnes going to play Aro? Or is that not decided yet?

  39. I’m really happy they kept him. Even though I was shipping Steven Strait, when they first cast Taylor they had to keep him.
It just looks bad changing up the cast.

  40. this is grt!!!! im so excited!!! he will do absolutly fantastic!!!! i love taylor so much and am so glad he is still jacob!!!

  41. All I can say is that in my mind, Taylor IS Jacob. So I am very very very excited that they decided to keep him. 😀 Besides…I’m not a big fan of changing cast members. I think it takes away from the “reality” of a movie.

  42. YAY!!!! I am so happy that they did keep him, I mean, it sounded wrond to get rid of a major character like that. I think Taylor will do fantastically and can’t wait to see New Moon!

  43. YEEEIII!!! I’m so glad!! ehehehhe
Goooo Jacob!! But, yes i’m also very curious about how they are going to make him bigger! =P
I read the first book over a year ago and i was so happy that there was going to be a movie! Now i’ve read them all (except breaking dawn that didn’t came out in portuguese yet…) and i can’t wait for the next movie!! =D

  44. I’m very happy with the announcement. I don’t understand the big deal about Jacob’s height. No one is going crazy anymore about Jackson Rathbone being too short or Ashlie Green being too tall for their characters. Why make a fuss if Jacob doesn’t hit his mark either?
