I paraphrased this from Summit’s press-release-ese so you’re not here for half a day (full thing at the Lex):

David Slade has been hired to direct THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE from a screenplay written by Melissa Rosenberg. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE […] will be released theatrically in North America on Wednesday, June 30, 2010.
(Stephenie) Meyer stated, “I am thrilled that David Slade will be directing ECLIPSE. He’s a visionary filmmaker who has so much to offer this franchise. From the beginning, we’ve been blessed with wonderful directorial talent for the Twilight Saga, and I’m so happy that ECLIPSE will be carrying on with that tradition.”
Filmmaker Slade came to prominence as a director for his work on 2006’s engrossing film HARD CANDY starring Academy Award® Nominated actress Ellen Page as well as directing 2007’s genre hit 30 DAYS OF NIGHT which opened to number one at the box office its first weekend of release.
In ECLIPSE, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob – knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life.
Having not seen either of his films, I don’t exactly know for sure what to make of the new director. All I keep wondering is what he is saying in this photo 😀
QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS: Do you agree with the pick for director? Who might you have picked instead?

Lol he is a gangster director
I've yet to make it to Hard Candy (it's on my Netflix list) but my boyfriend loved 30 Days of Night. Myself, I was pretty terrified so I barely had my eyes open, but he approves, so until I see Hard Candy, I'm gonna say this is probably a good choice
I love Hard Candy, is a weird amazing movie, I hope he does a good job
I really wanted Drew Barrymore to direct it….but hopefully he'll do well!
Erm..
Never heard of him
xD
Actually in England when the give you the finger they do it with two fingers. That's exactly what he's doing in that photo.
Hard Candy was a good movie, it was just hard to see Juno as this badass
he will do a GREAT job! i love his films and as stephanie said he is a good visionary director 😀 i'm not worried. in fact i'm stoked! bring it on David you gangster you. lol
yikes.. so it would be a mistake to give the peace sign in england..?
I don't know who I would've picked, but I don't know about David Slade. He's only directed two movies and they were both horror movies. I would say Eclipse is probably the most romantic book out of the series, so I don't know if he can handle that. I'm kinda wishing Chris and Catherine would just switch off films.
I Loved Hard Candy. It was a really really good movie. I did not recognize his name at first, but as soon as I saw that he was that movie's director I was calmed a little. Thanks for the info Kaleb 🙂
Hard Candy wasn't really a horror movie. Not in that sense. I think it can be described more as a drama, or perhaps a psychological drama more than a horror movie. That's my opinion anyway 🙂
Hard Candy came out long before Juno. Thankfully I saw it first 🙂 so it totally worked. Ellen Page is an amazing actress for sure.
Umm… It does look like hes flipping us off, doesn't it?
Well 30 Days of Night wasn't all that good of a movie, well considering the term vampires is a blood sucking parasite; so I guess the vampires where somewhat accurately portrait (Meaning they have blood all over their faces, throughout the whole movie… ) Umm not a pretty site. Also… as for the vampires' voices… imagine a pitch fork being scraped a crossed a chalk bored. Can't they be like the Cullen's or something? I don't mean to give anybody a bad critique I guess (maybe)…. But as for Hard Candy, no I have not seen it.
Hard Candy was EPIC. I can't wait.
I don't know anything about him but my thought is…why must we have different directors for each film? Now, I have to admit that I'm glad they made the switch after Twilight b/c I blame a lot of the problems with that film on the director. But regardless, you can't possibly expect to have a cohesive “saga” as they insist on calling it, when you have a different style for each one. I mean, the second one isn't even out yet! How do we know whether or not we like the vision of that director? It's just crazy to me. I think “sagas” like this should all be made like Lord of the Rings. But what do I know? And Eclipse is the most romantic? Um…I'm not sure I agree with that but it is an interesting way to look at it.
I'm not English so I can't say for sure, but I think that the peace sign is the same; it's offensive to do it the other way – as in, with the back of the hand out
I've actually never seen any of the movies he directed, by one of my best friends said that Hard Candy was great.
All I can say is that I hope he does a good job with Eclipse. It's my favorite one in the series!
Hahaha I really thought he was giving us the bird!
he seems to have a good “resume”. he just looks like the type of guy who would take the eclipse movie and run with it. and he sounds like he is a fairly decent director :]
30 Days of Night was pretty good so I have faith 🙂 He just can't get enough vampire films to direct, can he? XD
I just don't understand why they don't just stay with one director for all of them?
But whatever as long as they turn out good!
You rock my world Kaleb!!
In my opinion..
I am fairly disappointed with Summit in general. They are rushing this whole process by having a different director for every movie, which leads to the movies all being 'individual' and not 'series' of movies. Which really sucks, don't you think? If you wanted to watch all of the Twilight movies in a row, wouldn't you all want them to have the same type of feel (like they are produced by the same director), rather than 3 or 4 movies that are all completely different, and may not even seem like they are a series? Chris seems to be doing a fantastic job so far.. (by the looks of it, I wish he would have directed Twilight) I wasn't THAT impressed with Twilight the movie but I was pleased I guess you could say. I'm just disappointed that they have to RUSH RUSH RUSH everything. And for what? MONEY. It's so ridiculous. Can you just give the fans what they want, please?
I've never seen either of David's movies, but right now they just seem too 'horror' for the Twilight Saga, and horror Twilight is not. I think I would have rather seen Drew or the spanish guy (don't know his name).. But I suppose if this is the director, I will just have to deal with it. Hope he does a good job.
And on another note, I REALLY hope they push back the Eclipse release date. It's SO SOON. If you really think about it at least. They will have NO time to promote this movie.. since they will be trying to promote New Moon. Ugh. I would rather have it.. June 30th, 2011! I would rather wait for an excellent film then not wait for a crappy film… that should be and could be transformed beautifully onto screen.
Wow, that was a rant. Sorry! 🙂
Well im not a very happy camper. but we will see what be can do im not gonna judge him. just like i did with Chris. i will give him a chance.
I haven't seen hard candy, but I have seen 30 days of night. I am not a big fan of horror movies, but it was okay. I am just excited to find out that they are deff going to make the third movie, (and the 4th !!!!)
i LOVE Hard Candy, that movie is awsome!! i think is a good choice!
MAYBE the fourth.. I think MTV stated that it was all go, and then something else came up and now it's not in the clear yet, (stated by the Melissa Rosenberg- sorry on the spelling?), because they haven't decided if they can actually make it into a movie yet..
I haven't seen 30 Days of Night, but Hard Candy is a VERY good prerequisite for this book interpretation, in my opinion. I think it'll give the movie its proper attitude of suspense. I can't wait to see who they get to direct Breaking Dawn, whenever they finally decide the specs on that.
as long as he STICKS TO THE BOOK i will probably be satisfied.
that's the thing that irked me off the most about Twilight.
it would have been SO easy to keep most of the stuff they threw out…
(rants to myself for a moment. “WHY? WHY? WHY?!”)
but, yeah, Eclipse is my favorite in the series.
i'm probably gonna have high expectations…
and i hope this guy respects all the Twilighters…
lol, i can't wait for the Victoria be-heading, though! that'd should be… interesting…
=D
I love 30 Days of Night. It's in my top 5 Vamp movie fav's. He will do well, I believe. Especially with the Epic battle towards the end. 😀
I absolutely positively agree with you. I was about to write the exact same thing, but lo and behold, someone else had already fully expressed my intent. (^-^)
I personally do not see this director working out for this particular film. I have only seen Hard Candy, which was positively wonderful overall, but done a little too eerie for even that plot, and at times I thought the style was slightly bland. As soon as I read about this new development, I immediately proceeded to contact my friend so that I may borrow his 30 Days of Night so I might get a better idea of this director's style. I hear promising things about the special effects, so hopefully he might push for a later release date to make sure things are done well…
In my non professional opinion… I probably would have pinned Alfonso Cuarón for a wonderful director (HP Prisoner of Azkaban, A Little Princess, Children of Men, Great Expectations, also produced Pan’s Labyrinth). He has proven to be great with fantasy and telling an individual’s personal story (point of view). I think all of his films he has made his characters stunning yet real. I think the mystifying feel of his previous films would fit very well with Eclipse’s plot of romance and action. Am I wrong?
this is a random question but are they actually doing the victoria beheading now? I mean in a lot of movie serieses they try not to be repetitive and they already beheaded James….
movie people changed basically the entire 6th HP movie to keep the next one from being repetitive, will summit behead victoria?
what does everyone else think?
😀 melissaturkey
Wow. Okay never heard of this guy. Should be intresting. Though I am still nervous about New Moon.
But I do have to say I happy that the two movies aren't that far apart we won't that long of wait.
Plus I learned something new today. Don't give the peace in London.
To gloss over the beheading of Victoria would be something similar to: “O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die…..The End….. let’s just forget about Juliet shall we?”
Having a final end to the three-book struggle with Victoria, I think they at least need to portray it fully.
But even if you want to forget about Victoria and her impending doom and gloom and blouse snatching tactics, there is something much more important in seeing her beheaded.
Edward.
This is a pivotal point between Edward and Bella. This is the first time that Edward shows his true capabilities as a vampire and even more important, a killer. He is forced to succumb to his inner ‘beast’ that he despises so much to defeat Victoria (with full brutal force of coarse!). And his utter fear that Bella will be so stricken with horror that she will be terrified of him forever.
Then, Bella’s absolute acceptance.
That is the turning event for Edward and Bella’s relationship for me. He no longer has to fear what she will think of him and his inner ‘beast’, as much as he hates it, it is a part of him. Edward can now fully accept Bella’s love, now that he knows that she truly does love everything about him.
NEED BEHEADING end of story! (>^-^)>
I also haven't seen his movies, so I don't know if he's good or not. I hope he does a good job.
I wonder if they've thought about changing the screenplay writer Melissa Rosenberg… 'cause honestly I don't think twilight was that good… I agree with Heather, a lot of things were thrown out… The movie didn't do the book much justice. Sorry, but that's my opinion. I'm still a huge Twilight fan.
It doesnt exactly matter if agree or not since the director is already chosen. But I'm not going to judge.
I havent seen any of those movies. So I dont know if his good or not. But I guess my opinion will change while the development of Eclipse starts. If I had to pick another director I wouldnt know – but I'm thinking Chris Weitz since his doing New Moon. I havent seen any of his movies either but I can see some of the improvements that he is making and I personally feel that New Moon will be a better movie than Twilight. Also it would be nice if they kept the same director. It's a little annoying that they keep changing them.
30 Days of night was a vampire movie that scared the jeebies out of me. Maybe he didnt know what to do so he says hes number 1.
I think they're rushing because at least 6 of their main cast cannot age. At all.
And if they waited a year or so between shoots, if they did Breaking Dawn, and if they broke it up into 2 movies, their leading man would be 5-7 years older, be nearly 30 and still trying to play a 17 year old…I'm actually glad they are rushing because there's only so much a shave and a haircut can do…
And Hard Candy isn't a horror movie. At all. Its a psychological drama, not a thriller or a horror movie. And its a beautiful movie. It will be interesting to see Kristen Stewart (who I think shines in a role like Ellen Page's in Hard Candy) and Robert Pattinson work with a director with a bit more of an indy edge. Plus Eclipse is darker then Twilight. So is New Moon and BD. I hope they don't try and keep New Moon or the rest of the movies geared towards 9 year olds and actually let some of the darker underlying themes come through. I mean New Moon the book has Bella a full out manic depressive dealing with an addiction.
While it would have been great to have the same director for all the movies, that would have only worked if it was the right director.
Hard Candy was a serious and digusting film and 30 Days of Night was a Vampire horror flick. I find it comical that the person who directed a movie with vampires that resembled Mortal Kombat's Baraka is going to film a movie where vampires not only sparkle but they have virtues and marriage proposals. I know there is a crazy battle going on and the fear of a vampire war however alot of that isn't seen and doesn't peak till the end. Good luck David Slade you are entering a whole other planet and please put down the finger, fan girls who will bombarde you on your set and in interviews are sure to be offended 😀
its gonna suck if they dont make BD. It be weird if they didnt. i think they should of look and see of they can make all 4 books. rather then decided after they make the first 3. i rather have all 4 made not just 3. but i will still take what i can get =) i was just saying lol
well in the book her head rolls to bellas feet or something like that right? i dont think SM would let them be that graphical.cuz there are 9 year olds and what not that will be watching the movie… but then again if (well when i say) they do BD they will be way more graphical things they will need to do… so… i say they might be doing the be heading.. maybe…
wow i like you! lol u have excellent insight. i read all the post u left on here. very nice.
30 days of night is one of my fav movies of all time so im super excited 😀
I like David Slade, 30 days of night is an awesome vamp movie. It's set in alaska and when they go through their period of no sun for 30 days the vamps come out and terrorize a town. It's groosome and the vamps look really great 🙂
Why thank you very much! <(^-^)>
all I can say is interesting………………I haven't seen any of his movies so I have on idea what to expect. as long as he does Eclipse justice and does a good job I don't care who he is or what he's done before. bring on the newborn army & the “official” marriage proposal!
I love David. His work in 30 days of Night was amazing. Plus I have trust in summit. They are taking the Twilight Saga serious so they wouldnt just give that spot to a hobo.
Actually, as far as I know, I have NEVER seen anyone give the finger with two fingers. And I lived in England for like, five years.
But anyway, I'm not sure about this. It's better than Drew Barrymore I guess…
He sounds like a cool guy…I just hope he doesn't turn Eclipse into 30 Days of Night. I've never seen it myself (and I usually don't judge movies I haven't seen) but I know people who've seen it and they weren't that crazy about it. I'll have to watch it now though, to get a feel for how he might direct Eclipse. I wonder if they'll be releasing the director for Breaking Dawn soon… If they make it…….
