The song for this chapter is Don’t Turn Around by Plumb
[audio:https://twilightguy.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/dontturnaround.mp3]
Pardon me whilst I dodge your tomatoes and lettuce: I’ll mutter my apologies later for lack-o’-postin. I could continue apologizing for late posts, but the way it’s looking for the near future, my posts will be consistently inconsistent until Summer break. In fact, this week (March 5 and 6) I will be in Chicago, Illinois, at the offices of my publishers, for marketing talks (which, I assure you, will be more of fun than work for me). This means I most likely won’t post much this week as to actual blogs: though don’t be surprised if I have some updates from the hotel (perhaps, dare I say, a short BlogTV?).
But, I still can’t keep myself from reading the next chapter any longer: even if it is midnight right now, and I am slightly loopy. This could make for a rather entertaining, half-conscious review…

Where we left off, Bella had just received a wonderful gift from Edward in the form of Victoria’s head rolling at her feet. There are few people in this world who have had this experience, and I limit that to those of medieval times who happened to stand a bit too close to the guillotines. Lucky for Bella, there is no blood, so I’m imagining it’s pretty much just a clunky old head, much like C-3PO’s in Star Wars. I will cease my descriptions and analogies here, before everyone reading my site dashes for the nearest garbage can.
It is so funny that vampires burn with purple smoke. I am immediately reminded of a scene in an old television film with a soothsayer, who cast powder into a campsite fire and made billows of purple smoke erupt in the faces of the terrified knights. What chemical causes purple smoke? Is there something in a vampire’s body that makes this happen: perhaps the same thing that causes their skin to glitter rainbow-style?
Not one to give up on answering this question, I took it to the most reliable source in the world, from which I receive all answers to my life’s questions:

No luck with that one, obviously.
I notice that immediately after Edward realizes the Volturi are nearby, he begins to speak in very long sentences: almost muttering, perhaps. It’s an easy way to tell that underneath his assurances to Bella, he’s actually quite nervous as to what’s about to happen. I can’t ever remember Edward filling nearly half a page with his own babbling before, so he’s quite obviously upset by a quick change of plans.
It was warming to see that Carlisle treated Jacob Black, when barely a few months before I doubt they were even going to come within 900 feet of each other. As has been happening consistantly in the past few weeks between Forks and La Push, this is simply another surprising part of the chain of events that are perhaps weakening the anger between the werewolves and the vampires. I also totally want somebody to make a t-shirt that says ‘I’ve never been to veterinarian school’ and put a picture of a werewolf on it. Just sayin…hint hint, Cafepress minions.
Jane is such a terrifying little monster: it almost causes me pain to think of what she’s doing, even to someone like a vampire who desperately wants to kill Bella. Jane has a complete disregard for the pain of others, even to the point that after Edward tells her that Bree will answer questions, she continues to torture her mind, almost simply for the sake of her own amusement. Does she have an obsession with causing pain that those surrounding her should be informed of before offering their services? Luckily for Bella, her crazy mind totally wrecks Jane’s powers. I would imagine behind Jane’s constant smile:
she is actually thinking:
due to Bella’s wonderful talent at pwning her abilities.
Besides, I doubt it would have taken much for the band of Cullens to keep Bree stable: at least long enough for her to calm down, and perhaps accept their way of life. But still, Jane gives the order to tear Bree to pieces, and that’s it. It might even be more comforting if Jane had a monstrous temper, but she simply has a lack of any regard for the pain of others, which makes for a very frightening person indeed.
Question For The Comments: What do you think it would have been like if Bree had joined the Cullen coven? What power do you think she might have had (use your imagination, since you don’t get to see much of her).

As usual, this will be a long comment.
C-3PO! Best analogy ever. I don’t know if I’ll ever read that part the same now.
Yahoo! Answers literally has everything you can imagine. I’m sure if you really posted that, it would have some terrific answer within an hour. Who are these people who peruse Yahoo! Answers in hopes of solving someone’s great mystery?
Dude I hope someone makes that shirt. Shocking it hasn’t been made yet. We Twilighters are a creative bunch.
The snake smiling picture was creepy, but perfectly representing Jane. Let me just say, keep those two pictures and the comments that you put with it handy. That’s all I’m going to say.
Hmmm…I don’t know about Bree. Everyone seems curious about her, and Stephenie has said she would love to write something from her POV, but I don’t really see the fascination. She’s one newborn among many. And I’m not sure what powers she would have, we didn’t get to see much of her personality to figure anything out (just the mandatory hungry newborn side). What do YOU think?
Yes well after those jokes I say you do need some sleep but I like, very funny. I think that Bree would have the power to make people see what they are doing is unreasonable and change there mind as that is what I think she did with changing her mind to stop fighting the Cullens and would have gotten over the need to kill Bella with there help, Saying that I still dont think she would join them now she would go off on her own but keep in touch as they become good friends and they did save her life. just a thought lol
I think Jane has more than merely a lack of regard for the feelings of others. She likes causing others pain. She gets a perverted pleasure from causing pain, and probably did as a human as well.
You said you can’t remember Edward babbling for half a page before. I would like to refer to chapter 13 of Twilight (Confessions), in which Edward spends multiple pages monologuing about how much he wanted to kill Bella. In fact, I think Edward tends to use long words and long sentences. It’s just one of those things he does. Your observation is interesting, though. I guess when he’s nervous he forgets to act like a normal person.
If Bree had joined the Cullens, we would have a very different story. It would be much worse than Jasper, and there would probably be a few deceased Forks residents (I just spent 15 minutes trying to find the correct demonym and can’t find it. Ah well.) I’ll just say that, as it appears the a majority of vampires don’t actually have powers, Bree would not have a noticeable power, just something like the power to love passionately, or Super!Tenacity.
(Ah, dear. I do enjoy making fun of the super-vampiric powers.
“You have a super power? Cool. What is it?”
“I can see relationships. Cool, huh?”
“…”)
Hello kaleb!
I read your sites religiously but never really comment. I love your humor and opinions about twilight. This this brings me to the reason for my post… Why do you think, with stephenie’s obvious brilliance and carlisle’s obvious intelligence in the story, that he used the term “veterinarian school” instead of veterinary school? I don’t know why but this bugged me each time I read this part and now that you’ve brought it up I had to pose the question. The way it’s used in the book, it reminds me of something a child would say, not a centuries-old vampire. Then again, I could just be crazy, lol. Anywho, thanks for being so great and entertaining us! I’ll be reading! ๐
I think that a good power for her would be to shape change into anything, depending on her mood. I also think that she wouldn’t be able to cope very well with the cullens lifestyle, and after a couple of years she would leave and become a nomad.
I agree very much about what you said about jane. ( I have a pic on my fone of that cat shooting someone!)
I love the way that Edward is carefully approaching Bella because he assumes that she will be afraid of him. You would think that some shock would be in order, wouldn’t you? I suppose it never really registered with her because she was too concerned that he was going to be hurt.
It’s almost predictable that Jacob would be the one hurt; That just drags this threesome out a little bit longer. I, myself, am glad that Carlisle is the one caring for Jacob, as him going to the hospital seems to be completely out the question. I suppose he could go to the vet, but they’d probably have a good deal of questions. (haha)
I don’t like Bree, and I’m happier with her dead than as a new member of the Cullen clan. I do think she plays an important part, just as you picked up on, it really shows Jane’s character. Even more, it solidifies Carlisle’s character. Only he would think to offer the enemy a chance to surrender. I wish I could feel sorry for her, but I don’t. She did her part, now begone!
I’m also glad that the Volturi has mentioned that Bella is still human. I’m very anxious to see Bella as a vampire, even as Edward stalls time and time again.
Well, I don’t think that Bree would have anything super special like Edward or Alice or Jasper. I think that she would probably have one of the more subtle (or not so subtle in Emmet’s case) gift’s like loving or compassion. But since Stephenie Meyer is so interested in her as a character, perhaps she has some hidden quality that will be revealed at a later date! Hahaha!
And like someone said, it would be cool to be a shapeshifter, but seeing as vampires can’t change once they’ve been bitten, it woudn’t work. I have a friend who thinks that she would have that power if she were a vampire. Hahahaha! She also thinks that she would have the “uncanny ability to predict when a human needs to use the loo.” I saved the text she said that in!
And gosh! Jane is a monster isn’t she!? A rather frightening mix of angelic features and an evil nature. She doesn’t care a jot about the feelings of others. She just enjoys the fact that others are in pain, and not herself….
I shall end this very long post now. Ciao!
Yeah, I agree. I think that Breewould have a power like Jussie said. Something that makes people change their opinions and views. That would be a cool power. But from the little part she plays in Eclipse, I guess that is what we see of Bree. I dont really see how she might be an interesting character. If Bree had joined the Cullen Coven I think that she could have related to Jasper in a way. But I didnt really want her to join them. Nore did I want her to die.
Now I’m agreeing with altissimus. Jane enjoys watching people in pain. She finds pleasure in it, in a slightly creepy way!
Also I love the pictures! Especially the one with the Yahoo Answers! I cracked up!
Thanks Kabel!
Oh i agree about Jane being all the more scary because she simply does not care for the pain of others.
hhmmm i wonder what it would have been like if Bree had joined? Maybe we would be able to see what being a newborn was like firsthand and it would have put Bella of Vampiredom or something. Her power? well i can’t say anything that has come from knowing her personality but i can use my imagination….the ability to see the different outcomes of any decisions made…uno to no what would happen if u decide 2 do 1 thing or the other and then make the decision on what u no would happen…( i think that would be cool) or maybe just shooting lightning bolts from her eyes. ๐

Disperse Red Dye 80
Potassium Chlorate 56
Sodium Bicarbonate 46
Sulfur 10
First reduce each ingredient to very fine powder and then mix very, very well.
Sulfur: a nonmetallic, polyvalent, tasteless, odorless chemical element that occurs abundantly in yellow crystalline form or in masses, especially in volcanic areas. Its atomic number is 16, and its atomic mass is 32.07. It is used in the production of sulfuric acid and used in metallurgy, rubber vulcanization, petroleum refining, and many other industrial processes. Sulfur has been used in the treatment of gout, rheumatism, and bronchitis and as a mild laxative. The sulfonamides, or sulfa drugs, are used in the treatment of various bacterial infections.
If you postulate that a vampire’s body could contain sulfer by reason that they are immune to illness, this could be a strong theory.
Turpentine and iodine mixed together will make purple smoke.

It’s a really bad video, but you can see it for yourself.
I think that Bree could have some sort of self control, because she surrenders which would be very hard for a newborn to do.
Ihonestky think that if Bree stays longer with the Cullens and change her ways to become one of those ‘veggie loving’ vamps….
I think she’ll either have one of these extra powers…
well.. the ability to make things appear on her hands. like if she concentrates hard, and she wants a skull… POP! there it is on her hand!
if you get what i mean..
About that leopard gecko-in-a-hat-photo…
I have two of those and they’re named Eddie and Bella… XD
i think that if Bree was left to live she would have becom part of the Cullen Clan. Most people don’t think of her as a very important character, but i think she is. she is the last challenge to Balla, really a statement saying “Do you really wnat this?” and Bella being the person taht she says “Yes, i want it more than anything else.” Bree is probably the one character who got hurt in Eclipse that i was sad about. And as far as powerrs go i think she will be able to… i really dont know
HaHa. I actually thought Bree would end up joining the Cullens until i saw Jane torturing her. I honestly thought that would put a great spin on the story. A NEW CULLEN?! But i’m glad she didn’t. We got to see a very heartless Volturi.
I honestly don’t think she had a power. And if she did i’d have no clue seeing as we only saw one side to her.
Hahaha I love how people answered your purple smoke question =)
Ya I don’t think she would have a power. Not all vampires do. I think she played an important role in showing who Jane is, and like they said above, giving Bella one last chance to see what she is to become.
I’m not sure if I can wait until your next post! Ahhh!
You want to know what can make purple smoke? Nitrogen Triiodide. It is a touch sensitive compound that causes a small explosion and purple somke. The smoke is a cloud of Iodine vapor.
I would not have liked it very much for Bree to join the Cullens, for the simple fact that she might have killed Bells. I mean if Jasper has to keep a distance then Bella would have never been allowed at the Cullens, and then somebody (not naming names Bella) would have gotten a bit jelly, then it would have been a whole ‘nother book of fights and convos about Bree. haa haa.
I don’t think Bree had a power-the Volturi would have kept her if she did.
hey im a big fan loving following the eclipse chapter by chapter.
in my chemistry class we found potassium turned smoke purple. i wonder if vampires secretly snack on bananas?
well, It’s kinda cool, the way she is like a newborn, and she can resist herslf around Bella. I mean Bella still had that gash in her arm from where she attacked herself. It’s an open wound, and Bree’s not going crazy. I mean in New Moon, Jasper FREAKS when Bella gets a paper-cut. But you know, Bree sees Bella has this big ol gash, and she’s cool with it.
BUT…… if she stayed with the Cullens, Edward would get angry. Cuz there’s a vampire who wants to eat his girlfriend, living with him. Jasper doesn’t WANT to eat her, he just can’t help it. But if she stayed she would have some super-awesome spamtacular magic power, like….. being able to levitate off the ground, or levitate things with her mind, or move things with her mind, or be able to eat 100,000 people in one sitting *mwaaaa haaaa haaaa!* can’t purple smoke come out of a purple dragon’s mouth? Puff the magic dragon, lived by the sea. I wonder if Puff was purple? Hmmm….
I Really Think That Stephenie Should Have Had Bree Join the Cullens Intead of Killing Her Off.
Then We Would’ve Gotten a Completely Different Story For Breaking Dawn & I Think it’d Be Better.
If She Joined Them I Could Really See Her & Jasper Bonding Due to Their Blood Lust. Jasper Was a Pretty Neglected Character in the Story, so I Think This Would’ve Brought Him Out More.
I’m Not Really Sure What Kind of Power I Think Bree Would Have Had.
I know there’s something that causes purple smoke. There has to be. In my high school chemistry class, we had a whole lab devoted to what chemicals produce what color.
I loved the pictures! Those last two are too funny!! Another thing is, I never thought of looking up what causes purple smoke. Hahaha. Well to get to your question…Bree might have a power already since she is a vampire. I think if she were to become one of the Cullens and exercise that power it would be self-control, like Carlisle. She was fighting really hard not to drink Bella’s blood. I think it would definitley add a twist to the story if she came. It would be odd for her though because she does not have a mate and all the Cullens do…Who knows, maybe she would have eventually fallen for Edward, even though he would never have fallen for her.
I absolutely loved the pictures!:D
I think if bree had joined the cullens she wouldnยดt have stayed for very long, maybe until learning how to control her thirst… actually i think she might have been very sad, because stephenie wrote something(on her website) which said bree found and lost love while she stayed with victoria and Riley…
Oh wow. That picture of the mad scientist is a great depiction of what I look like when I’m sleep-deprived too ๐
to number commentor 24. Idon’tknow, Bella didnt have a gash. she touched the rock to her skin but she didnt cut herself.
This question is officially the #1 Hardest Question That Kaleb Nation (aka Twilight Guy) Has Ever Thought Up. Ever. Wow. I think Bree’s power would be…MIND CONTROL!!! Like, she could go into peoples heads and make them do stuff. But sometimes they might so absolutely do not want to do something really that she cant change there subconscious mind. So mind control but not for really serious things. Small things. Yes. Which would also be my gift. Because I can do that already. OoOoOoO. No kidding, I can do mind control. Its scary.
Purple smoke. Purple smoke. How do you make purple smoke? My only answer: You burn a vampire. I looked it up on trusty old google. But of course, google did not search “purple smoke”, because google uses the stupid type-words-in-your-desired-query-we-will-find-the-words method. so what i got was “Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple” and “making smoke bombs that are colored purple”. Not what I was looking for. No answer for that question. Sorry
Bree joining the Cullens would be a terrible plot twist, which is why I’m glad she did not join. The Cullens would not need another control-lacking vampire (sorry Jasper–you’re still my favorite). Besides, with the wolves, the Volturi, keeping their secret, eventually changing Bella, and Jasper’s current trouble of abstaining from human blood, they wouldn’t need another thing to worry about.
Anyways, I think Bree would have a really odd, extraordinary power that wouldn’t be too terribly useful. Maybe…
-Mediumship, the ability to talk to the dead
-Shadow manipulation. Do I need to explain this? Control shadows…yeah.
-Or maybe even animation, where you can bring an inanimate object to life. Ok, this would make for great practical jokes, but seriously?
And, like most of the people above me, I do not know of how to make purple smoke, other than burning a vampire.
Oh, and awesomeness pictures. ๐
I liked this chapter… and you are so right about Jane… you can tell she would like nothing better than to get the chance to fight Bella.
I think this is the earliest I’ve ever gotten to comment… sweetness
Bree wasn’t meant to survive. She played her role – showing Bella what her future could be and showing us just how sadistic Jane was. If there was a tale to tell for Bree, it would be about being part of the newborn army. Watching the fighting and feeding from the inside.
However, I think her power would have been the ability to make peace between warring parties.
Love the pics!! Good luck in Chicago!!
Jane? sadistic? surely not.
anyway, Bree… i don’t know if she’d want to stay with the Cullens. I see her as more of a nomad-type personally. Great fanfic idea, though.
only way I know of to get purple smoke is either burning a vampire or purple smoke bombs.
helpful? probably not. but it’s better than what you got from Yahoo Answers, lol
I think if Bree joined it would be very interesting. But I am glad she didn’t because it would have changed Breaking Dawn
completely.I think the power she should have had would be levitation. I mean, it would have been so awsome if she could lift things with her mind.
By the way, I loved the pics they were hilarious.
Wow, that’s one image I will never get out of my head. As for your question, I think that after Bree becomes better at resisting blood, that she would fit well in the coven. Her personality reminds me of Jessica for some reason. I don’t know what kind of power she would have though. Is it just me or have you been saying pwned a lot? Great post! =D
I love the evil cat picture. It made me laugh!
I LOVE this chapter. The first time I read it, I thought I had mis-read the name Bree because all my friends call me that (short for Breeanna). I thought my mom was crazy for naming me that, but now I can brag to all my friends that I am in one of Stephenie Meyer’s books. When they disagree, I tell them to look it up: I’m 15, have dark brown hair, and absolutly going to claim its me in the book! =)
Hahahhaa, C-3PO reference=awesome. However, you mention the guillotine in the middle ages. Which would be extraordinarily difficult, because the guillotine was largely employed by French revolutionaries about the year 1780, a good century after the middle ages are generally agreed to have been over. I, of course, know this after having finished A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens…It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the epoch…. Don’t mind me, just your friendly, neighborhood know-it-all helping you out. ๐
Love your “pics” of Jane. I kind of feel sorry for Bree, because she did exhibit some self control and still got tortured and killed. I imagine that she was fighting Esme and neither of them really wanted to fight. The Bella Cullen project song also makes me feel sad about her. I don’t think she would have a superpower. Also, Bella did gash her arm, because her bleeding distracted Seth and Edward had to help him kill Riley.
Hmm. If Bree had lived, I think she would be able to see things from other people’s perspective. Like empathy, you know? Because she can see Carlisle really wanting her to join the Cullens and Edward not wanting to lose Bella enough to surrender and restrain from killing Bella.
Love the post by the way. Kittens with shotguns and purple smoke on yahoo answers… I ask you… XD (laughing smiley face)
Ennui is what I would call Jane’s reaction to other’s feelings. She’s had how many hundreds of years of using her gifts. How many times has she had to “take care of” vampires breaking the rules? How much pain, abuse and whatever is caused because people are bored? Her life never changes and she no longer connects with it or is engaged by it. She does it because she can and for Jane, that’s all there is to it.
Bree should be able to fly at supersonic speeds! That would be intense!
Oh, Kaleb. That cheery gecko and that psychotic cat made me ROFL! or as Stephenie Meyer would say, “Laugh Buckets”!
If Bree joined their coven, I think it would be pretty hard for Bella to be around her at all for a couple years. She seemed pretty…. Scary. Though she might have the power of Self-control, because she’s a newborn, and they’re pretty uncontrollable and she was able to restrain herself (with Jasper’s “help”) from trying to go after Bella. But then again, she may just be scared of what the consequences would be… Edward can be intimidating sometimes ๐
OMG LMFAO!!!! I HAVENT LAUGHED SO HARD ON HERE BEFORE!!! lol. those are great analogies. heheh. and omg i think i wanna look for you in y!a cuz oh em geeeze thats my spot right there! i go there for just about any question i need an anser to. lol. and OMG!!! HAHAHA! that picture of, what is that? a salamander and the cat holding the gun?? HAHAHAHAHA Omg thanks for making my night.
Sorry, i didnt write on bre, but i just dont find her that interesting.
OH EM GEEZIE AND CAN I SAY…OMG BEST CONTEST??!!
Argh! You update at the worst times! It was 4am over here! How am I supposed to be one of the first to comment if you update at times like that? And then I had to go to school! So here I am, 12 hours after you posted. One initialized phrase: Wth.
Anway, I loved this line:
‘Bella had just received a wonderful gift from Edward in the form of Victoriaโs head rolling at her feet.’
Aw, Edward, you shouldn’t have! Ahaha… Fun.
No answers? Psh! People these days! Don’t you worry, I have the answer. Vampire venom! Do you suppose it would be an acid or alkaline? Actually… neither of them cause purple smoke. Smoke, certainly, but purple? I’ll ponder this.
Where do you get those pictures? Seriously, you seem to have a collection almost as large as my brother’s. No idea where he gets them, but he has thousands of funny pictures.
Hm. If Bree had joined the Cullens… Well, not all vampires have powers. Distinct powers, anyway. Useful powers. But I’ll try and come up with something plausible… An amazing ability to color coordinate that eventually saves them from the wrath of Aro by distracting him with trendy outfits? Ahaha. I bet there’s a fanfiction like that out there. Some of those fics… they make you wonder what the “writer” was thinking.
Iodine produces purple smoke when it is vaporized.
And though I do think Bree would have joined the Cullens gratefully, I don’t think she would have had a special power at all. She’d just slowly become part of the family.
It was hard for me to deal with what happened to her – I wasn’t attached, but it was a horrible event…
Invisibility? I dunno, you don’t really get to see Bree much…
And about the purple smoke…My first thought is iodine. The only crap thing is, it’s actually lethal to breathe in, and I don’t think it smells nice…-Shrugs- Oh well, I’m just starting Chemistry this year, so I don’t know any other substances…
