A guy reads Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (2009-2011)

Reading Breaking Dawn: Chapter 14 (You Know Things Are Bad When You Feel Guilty For Being Rude To Vampires)

The song for this chapter is All Or Nothing by Theory Of A Deadman

This morning I discovered, much to my dismay, that June marks the fact that half of 2009 has gone by already, and that there are only 3 months and 11 days until I turn that glorious age of 21 on September 16 (if I hear one more thing about sharing Nick Jonas’ birthday, I think I will randomly burst into flame). What has happened to the first half of this year? Where hath all mine time gone? I don’t think I can answer that question. The closest question I can answer is as to what I have not been doing, such as keeping my room clean:

1

This photo was taken 2 weeks ago. It is still applicable, because hardly anything has changed.

When I showed this to one of my former roommates, he simply laughed and said at least I didn’t have roaches and bedbugs. Oh course I’m lucky for that. I’m also lucky I don’t have scorpions and goblins either. Oh the joys of college living.

To help ease my mind from such frivolous troubles, I do what I usually do, and push all the mess into the corner and do something else: namely, reading the next chapter of Breaking Dawn. Much to my enjoyment, this chapter starts off with some immediate lulz, because just imagining Jacob Black in a sundress is nearly enough to make me fall out of my chair. I wish that I could conjure up some sort of Photoshopped image of this, but for Taylor Lautner’s sake, I will refrain and simply post the next best thing

2

Jacob makes a wonderful point about him and Bella: how her reaction to seeing him just makes it all the harder to stay away. He knows that she is married, and much to my dismay, he is actually trying to stay clear of her and Edward.

Finally, I get to see what is going though Jacob’s head when situations like this come up. Jacob isn’t so much sticking around so he can take advantage of any chance he has to steal Bella from Edward (though I have little doubt he would take this opportunity). Jacob seems to be staying simply because he, like Edward, values Bella’s happiness above his own, which I hadn’t really seen as his motivation as much before when I was watching from outside his head.

This interests me greatly, because the reason I’ve been annoyed at Jacob so much throughout these books is because he appeared to be so self-centered. But it seems as if Bella could just not want him around anymore, and he would retreat. The real reason he keeps coming around, and interfering with Bella and Edward, actually appears to be because Bella won’t be happy if he leaves.

“If she would just not care… Or more than that–really not want me around. It would be so much easier to stay away.”

So who really is to blame here? I keep asking myself this, and I have throughout the Saga after New Moon. It confuses me so much because there is no solution, and my rational brain demands one of this problem. There is a triangle with equal weight put upon all three people — Jacob Black needs to somehow find someone else to love, so that he will be happy; and in the process, be able to leave Bella happy, since she knows he will be alright.

I’m curious to know what other person actually told Rosalie the blonde joke about the mirror at the bottom of the pool:

Rosalie walks by.

RANDOM IDIOT: Hey! Know how to drown a blonde? You glue a mirror to the bottom of a pool!

-PUNCH- -YELL- -WHACK-

and that's what you get for your blonde jokes

“That’s what you get for those blonde jokes!” Rosalie snarled.

It makes me happy to see Esme and Carlisle actually trying to help Jacob and his rogue band of wolves out. I have a very good feeling about this eventually playing a huge part in bridging the gap between their two peoples.

QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS: Do you think if Bella told Jacob to leave, he would actually do it, or would he continue to stick around trying to get her back?

  1. I think Jake would leave if Bella asked. If he believed it would truly make her happy, he would go.

  2. yeah… i also think that he would leave if she tell him to… I BLAME BELLA….!!! hahaha…

  3. If he could tell that she really meant it — and you remember that in the previous book, he knew how she felt better than she did — he would leave. It would be easier on him in the long run, too; and he knows it.

  4. If he were asked this as a hypothetical question, he would probably say yes. But he would know in his heart she could never bring herself to it. If she really did, he wouldn't have the guts. Happy very early birthday! Yours is actually the day after mine!

  5. I think that if Bella really told Jacob that she didn't want him around anymore, didn't want him in her life, didn't care what happened to him that he would actually leave. What possible reason would he have for sticking around? He knows that she's not going to change her mind, and that she's going to break his heart again, so there's really no self-centered reason for him to stick around.

  6. I think Jacob would have left (although everyone seems to be saying that) because it is what she wants. The end.
This was one of my favorite chapters in this book because, like you Kaleb, I always thought Jacob was just being selfish. I finally got to see that he only does the things he did because he really really cares for Bella. He may think about Bella in the chapters before this, the things he thinks about how if she would just care less about him, he could go away in this chapter shows (to me) that he will do whatever she wants him to. Sorry this is kind of long. It's late which means I can't word my thoughts as well as I usually can. Well, thats all, I promise.

  7. OME- Kaleb, we have the same birthday!
Mexican Independence day, too, so I'm told~

(I'm also told that everyone shares their birthday with 8,999,999 people- at least one of mine is awesome!)

  8. I know something cooler than sharing your birthday with nick jonas. I am also turning 21 this year and my birthday is September 17th….you were born one day before me. Pretty strange…it always trips me out to find people close to my day haha. Well Happy Early Birthday ;]

  9. My room looks like that! Lol. The joys of being a college student, indeed. I haven't cleaned since I was in high school. Bad situation.

This is why I grew to like Jacob in this book. He finally stopped trying his damnedest to steal Bella away. I think in Eclipse, he believed that what would make her happy was being with him, and she just didn't know it yet, therefore it was his job to enlighten her. But after he shattered half his body and Bella came to him saying she was staying with Edward no matter what, I think he finally realized that it's Edward who makes more happy and had the strength to let her go.

I think if Bella said stay away and it looked like she meant it, then he would. But I have a feeling he would stay close just to make sure she's safe.

  10. At this stage, if Jacob asked him to leave, he would. He is hurting deeply, and knows that he needs to start trying to get over her. Before now, though, he definately wouldn't have left, because although he knew he was fighting a lost cause he couldn't leave until he knew there was absolutely no hope.

  11. Hey! You have the same birthday as me! Cool! I'll be 17 this year ๐Ÿ™‚ I've been reading your twilight blogs for pretty much the whole time you've been doing, read every one. You reek of awesome! ๐Ÿ˜€

  12. I think at this poit, yes Jacob would leave if that was what Bella wanted. He wouldnt want to leave but he would do it. I think that prior to the Marriage, like during Eclipse, Jacob most likely would not have left quietly if Bella told him to leave her alone. I think at that point Jacob would have thougt he was right to keep trying to force his company on Bella, because Jacob is kind of outspoken.

  13. He wud try to stay away but he wouldnt be able to and you'll seen soon enuf why he cant stay away from Bella. Thats all im sayin i dun wanna ruin the surprise cos i was truly gobsmacked wen i realised wa happened :O

  14. Jacob would leave. He would internally die, and probably run, like, around the planet a couple times to blow off his sadness and anger (as a wolf), but he would still leave because he knows that would be what Bella wanted. However, I think he would eventually come back, all intentions of stealing her from Edward gone. He loves her too much to leave for good, but maybe he would only stay near, not talk to her or anything.

  15. Dang. I always forget to check. Ah well, I was playing with my niece and a puppy, so it was worth being late to the post.

You share a birthday with a Jonas? Tsk. What happened to you, Kaleb? You used to be cool. On the other hand, you're only 10 days away from my birthday, which does make you a little cooler.

I'm glad the year's almost half gone. Time is going too slowly. At this rate, my life is going to last forever. I'm going to lead the most boring existence of anyone, ever. Being a vampire forever would be better than being a human for another 60 to 70 years.

If Bella told him to leave, and really meant it, then he should leave. But who knows?

  16. That little doggy in a sundress picture was the cutest thing! It's probably a good thing you didn't photoshop Taylor in a dress… I probably would've used it for blackmail! LOL!
    Anywho…
It's pretty obvious at this point in the series that Jacob wants to be there simply because Bella wants him there. I don't think he'd be there if Bella didn't want him. Especially with Rose around…. XD

  17. That picture looks like my room. ๐Ÿ˜€
I'm sure Stephenie's choice of words all gave us a good image of Jacob in a sun dress, but answering your question earler, i think jacob would back up. what is the point of loving her (and being around smelly vampires) while she doesnt love him back? there is no point, really.
boy, will you get a shock when you finish jacob's point of veiw. it all flows together and everyone is happy

  18. I have no idea ..this love triangle is very confusing….. I hope he will find some eventually.
By the way nice picture..it looks exactly like my closet .hehe!

  19. he would be heartbroken and depressed, but he would leave especially if it would make her “happy” cos he loves her so much =)
my whole room pretty much looks like that too. haha

  20. I think Jacob would leave if Bella asked him to. Of course, if he thought she was just saying this for his benefit or some other reason other than for her sake then he would stay; he can see right through her when she lies. But yes, he would leave, despite great emotional pain. Jacob's awesome like that.

  21. i think that even if she did ask him to leave, it wouldn't be likely that he would. he says he would, but on the inside, he knows that he can't live without her. he may run away for a week or two like he did in the beginning, but otherwise i think he'll stick around for her happiness.

  22. That picture of your room is not as bad as my room at the moment… The reason? It's exam time and usually, student's rooms are the cleanest during exam time (from all the procrastination that we do XD ) but mine is just plain messy. Notes, books, pens and bags everywhere along with my basket freshly washed clothes (thanks mom!)

Anyway, Jacob in a sun-dress??? ROFL! I'd like to see that someday XD…. You gotta love the 'relationship' that Jacob and Rosalie has, it's hilarious! Specially after the baby is born…. hmm… better shut up now… and oh! there's another reason why Bella is always happy to see Jacob beside from the obvious.

For your question, I think that he would leave if Bella told him to but only if he's sure that she's gonna be happy. It's quite evident that he was willing to step down as soon as he found out that Bella chose Edward. He only has qualms about Edward because he's a vampire and that he's (Edward) going to turn Bella.

  23. i think if Bella tod him to leave he would, BBUUTT i think he would always come back and watch to see if shee was ok. i dont think he could leave her forever

  24. Hey kaleb i read ur blog all the time but this is my first time to comment . . Well after reading the books a number of times i came to realize that jacob would not leave even if bella told him flat out i dont love u , ur not my friend go away . . becuase there is something there holding on to jacob telling him not to leave her . . he might have left the house and never went back inside but he would still always be there .. he is tied to bella beyond logical reason . . i dont want to give to much away so im gonna stop there . . . i love how jacob keeps slamming rosalie with dumb blonde jokes . . . hilarious

p.s THAT PIC OF UR ROOM LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE MY ROOM EXCEPT I HAVE JUNK FOOD EVERY WHERE AND BOOKS SCATTERED ALL OVER THE FLOOR AND U KNOW IM A GIRL SO THERE ARE GIRL CLOTHES EVERYWHERE ..

P.P.S THE DOG IN THE SUNDRESS SO CUTE . .

  25. Ah, because I know the ending.. no, he wouldn't stay away.

He has to be in her life, he just doesn't understand why yet. He wants to stay away, and if there wasn't something unknown to him holding him there, he would, but he simply can't. If he could, I for one think he would have given up long before this. I think he would have given up when he found out they were engaged, they kissed, and she chose Edward anyway. He can't even really pin point what it is about Bella that holds him there, so for her alone, he wouldn't stay and put up with it, but knowing that there's something else, he would have stuck around regardless. That's all I can say without spoiling.

  26. I think he would just run around trying to protect her, that's all. And I don't think Bella would tell him to leave. Not Bella.

  27. I think Jacob would leave if Bella told him to, because he wants to do whats best for Bella, but also what makes her happy.
If she said “I want you to leave” he would assume that would make her happy and he would leave.

  28. Nah. He'd stay away if it made her happy. Plus, I don't think he would try to get her back.

Him staying makes her happy though, so he's stuck.

  29. Sure, you don't have scorpians and goblins but you have plenty of gnomes. If Bella told Jacob to leave now he would probably stay because he is some what stubburn, plus, he might not believe her.

  30. I think Jacob would leave if Bella told him to, even though he would try not to because he knew that would hurt Bella. I think all this isn't just Jacob's fault, this love triangle. I think is everybody's: Edward left in New Moon and Bella fell in love with Jacob, then she can't stay away from either of them, and Jacob wants her too.

  31. “[…]only 3 months and 11 days until I turn that glorious age of 21 on September 16 (if I hear one more thing about sharing Nick Jonasโ€™ birthday, I think I will randomly burst into flame).” lol my birthday is on September 19- just like Hermione Granger!

  32. Hi Kaleb! Yes, I think Jacob would have left if Bella really wanted him to. Although I think he's a tiny bit more selfish than Edward, he's still not one to deny Bella whatever she wants, as long as she is safe. I can't see him recovering very quickly from that kind rejection, though.

  33. Ah, Kaleb. Your not knowing whats gonna happen is cracking me up. Right now, he can't leave her, and she can't tell him to leave, for reasons you will soon find out. But, if we are assuming Bella can and does tell Jacob to go away, I think he will leave her alone, but won't leave. He will stay around the Cullens' house to protect them and Bella. He just will avoid Bella. Then when he is positive she is out of danger, he will run away for good.

OMT, Kaleb! My birthday is September 9! that's 7 days before yours (and the day Bran Hambric comes out). the 16th is also the date Edward leaves Bella in New Moon. : ( sad….

haha “where hath all mine time gone?” i'm thinking the exact opposite. I want this year to be over with. cant wait for my school to get out.

    Adios!!!!

  34. u can't get back something that u never had…i know is not fair for jacob but this is the situation.jacob was by her side and helped her to live and to fix something that edward has brake inside her.and no,he wouldn't leave.he's the opposite of edward…

  35. I am soo glad people are FINALLY trying to see the true side of Jacob Black.

He DOES put Bella's feelings and interests first.

It appears that he is being self-centered and a jerk at times, but he actually understands her better than she understands herself (and so does Edward at times, that is why he continues to tolerate Jacob in their lives).

It is true that he wants Bella for himself, what person in love doesn't want the person of their affection for themselves?
It is also true that when that person is choosing someone else over you, you can't help but obsess over them and dream about what “could be”. This is especially true in our teen years/early twenties, and please remember that Jake is 17 (about).

He could get over her if she were out of his life. He know this. The rational side of him WANTS this. But he know, that he won't and can't do it as long as she needs him near her. He will even do things that he hates doing (like talking to her about “another baby”) for Edward, if he thinks it has ANY chance (slim to none, he know) of working. He is starting to understand and feel compassion for Edward, too. As much as he wants to hate him, he can't. They are both working together for Bella's well-being.

This 3-sided love is what makes this Saga soo awesome. That's why all teenage girls want to be Bella, to have two such wonderful guys in their lives. How lucky she is.

There are soo many kinds of wonderful types of love in the Saga, (brotherly/sisterly, maternal, paternal, best friend) but these three are what puts the Twilight Saga over the top as one of the best books of all time. (the BEST, in my humble opinion).

And your right, Kaleb. Jacob just has to find someone else to love, so that him and Bella can be best friends again.
And Esme and Carlisle are beyond awesome.

  36. Sorry, but no. May 5th is Cinco de Mayo, which is the commemoration of the Battle of Puebla.
The 16th of September is Mexican Independence Day.
    (I know 'cause I'm a Spanish teacher.)

  37. I think he would have left, because he only wants Bella's happiness, and if it makes her happy… But I think he really would have suffered and made him unhappy. So Bella would have been unhappy too, and made him come back ๐Ÿ™‚ And they all finally be happy (;

  38. hehe, i get the nick jonas thing ALL the time! we've got the same birthday. ๐Ÿ™‚
    love reading your blog

  39. There is a reason that he keeps coming back (like people above have said), so he might have left but would've eventually came back.

I need to show my mom that picture of your room, so she can see that i'm not the only one with a messy room.

  40. This is the first time I have ever posted a comment here. I usually don't post my opinions because I feel most people in some way or form have already voiced what I am thinking. I'm not even sure if I'm writing this in the right spot or not. I just want to finally say a few things about Jacob and of course, Bella too.

I completely agree with you and your frustration with Jacob. I have always felt a form of animosity towards him when it comes to his relationship with Bella. I too during this chapter started to realize that Jacob might not be as selfish as it has always seemed.

I started to get frustrated with Bella about why she just couldn't seem to let go, but as I read on I realized something that made perfect sense. I'm not going to say what it is to avoid spoilers, but it is something that I hope you search for in the future. I know many fans have made the connection, but I have noticed that it hasn't been mentioned a lot in some forums. I have learned through out the series that Stephenie always has her characters feel a certain way for a reason. This is no different.

Anyway, I am going to stop rambling now and I hope you have a relaxing summer. I know your birthday isn't until September, but happy early birthday. Don't drink too much. I know I was tempted, but I can honestly say that for my 21st, last year, I did not go overboard and that made it so much better.

    Kari
