The song for this chapter is Shape Of My Heart by Sting

I am slowly becoming convinced that the above illustration is an accurate representation of how these chapters got to be named. I’m actually quite enjoying these long chapter titles, despite the fact that they span multiple lines across my screen and thus utterly ruin my site design. Since this long chapter title thing seems to be a quirk that isn’t disappearing anytime soon (at least until Jacob Black learns to control the length of his thoughts) I examined some other books, trying to find their longest chapter titles. The longest chapter title in THE GRAVEYARD BOOK by Neil Gaiman is the first, “How Nobody Came To The Graveyard”; in THE GOLDEN COMPASS by Philip Pullman, it is the last chapter “The Bridge To The Stars” (for those wondering, the longest chapter title I’ve written was “Sewey Wilomas Versus The Oncoming Train”). If there was a Longest Chapter Contest, Stephenie would surely have us all beat.
Edward has a wonderful variety of cars to choose from, and even though he’s probably mostly known by his Shiny Silver Volvo, the Aston Martin Vanquish is the one I’m most interested in. For those of you who don’t research much about the cars in this book, the Aston Martin Vanquish was the official car of the James Bond film Die Another Day, discontinued in 2007, and generally costs about $129,000. “BUT WE DO NOT CARE ABOUT THIS FRIVOLOUS INFORMATION,” I see many of you shouting. “EDWARD CULLEN DRIVES IT SO THAT MAKES IT TEH HAWTNESS.”

Jacob had better not carry out the second part of his plan and crash this car, or he’s going to be in a bit of trouble trying to pay that off (you know, the whole, you break it, you buy it rule?). I’m sure it would also be a very interesting situation if Charlie happened to be patrolling that day, and caught Jacob going 200 MPH in Edward Cullen’s Aston Martin Vanquish.
CHARLIE, strolling up to window: Hello sir, you were going 200 in a 60 mile p–JACOB BLACK, WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!
JACOB: Sorry Charlie. I can explain everything. Edward Cullen, mortal enemy of my werewolf people, gave me the keys to his $129,000 car so I could get away from the drama surrounding your daughter, who I still love despite her marrying a bloodsucker, and the painful birth of her vampire-slash-human baby, who is currently eating her from the inside out and forcing her to drink little cups of blood.
CHARLIE: Um. Can we back up to the the $129,000 car part?
I think that going on a soulmate-search is perhaps one of the best ideas that Jacob Black has had in a long time. If I was a werewolf, and I knew that there was some way to KNOW for sure who my true soulmate was, I would not be able to rest until I had crawled the world for this person. It is just insanity for him to stick around Bella, knowing that he will never imprint on her, and somewhere out there is someone for him — so much, that this ‘imprintee’ might even make him forget about Bella immediately. It’s like magic. As soon as he find her, all this pain will be gone.
However, as if to challenge what I just wrote, Jacob then says:
Magic wasn’t going to save me. I was just going to have to take the torture like a man. Suck it up.
Or perhaps Jacob, you just enjoy wallowing in your sorrows instead of sucking it up and going somewhere other than where Bella is. Whoops. I think a werewolf just ripped my head off.
I find it interesting how Edward was able to somehow find a way to keep his treaty with the werewolves and at the same time, find a way to save Bella’s life. Jacob is the true Alpha of the pack, so Edward doesn’t really have to ask Sam or the others about this. And when it comes to Bella’s life being at stake, it might end up being the only way for her to stay alive (as alive as she can be considered as a vampire, that is). But will Sam and the others really accept this? They don’t accept Jacob’s leadership, so even though he has the right, I have strong doubts that the other wolves will just give in and let him have it his way.
And oh, what a wonderful image to leave me with as I finish this chapter. A fountain of blood you say? Good thing I stopped eating snacks while reading Breaking Dawn.
QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS: Regardless of what ACTUALLY happens in the rest of the book, if Jacob imprinted on another girl (for example, one of the mall girls) do you think he would really be able to leave Bella, or is his love for her too powerful even for imprinting?

– My big trip to Forks, WA for Summer School In Forks is coming up! I leave on Wednesday, which means I will have a hard time getting to my computer, and posts will be less than usual. But I shall return with photos and cool stuff!

Ahaha. You're right. You do look 100 times more attractive just by photoshopping yourself into the car. Ahaha.
Of course he'd leave her alone if he imprinted. That's the entire point of his search. Even if he doesn't really believe it will work, it would have to. Otherwise his imprintee would've gotten the worst deal ever. Imagine finding your soulmate just to have him love someone else more. I think I'd punch him.Or maybe a crowbar would be a better idea.
Thanks for the post time. Well, I suppose it's the same time as always, but it's a Saturday today! And the primary school that's next to my high school is having a fete, therefore I'm up at crazy times like 9 am.
HAHAHA about the chapter titles.
As for the question, he'd definitely be able to leave her. That's the whole thing with imprinting. Remember how Leah and Sam were in love? Then Sam imprinted on Emily? Now Sam doesn't hold romantic feelings towards Leah. The same thing would happen to Jake. Let's say Jake imprints on a girl named Amber. Now, Jake will only see himself with Amber. While he may continue an awkward friendship with Bella, Amber is his love. And that imprinting love overshadows all.
I think so. Imprinting is too powerful even for Bella's attractiveness 😛
I think he'd always care for her as a friend, but no, if he got brainwashed like imprinting's supposed to do to you, i don't think he'd like her like that anymore.
Second post? Maybe?
And I've said this many times before, saying it again. I LOVE JACOB'S TITLES!!!!!
YAY. COOL STUFF!
The title of that chapter made me lol.
And as for your question: I think not.
Sam was able to let go of Leah, who he had known for ages and was apparently his true love, for Emily, who he had just met and gave up Leah to be with her.
The whole Sam thing kinda answers that question xD
Kitty
xzx
Rakey, you should have used a girl named “Mary” as your example. That's what i would have done!! =P
And, oops, only got fourth post. Still, pretty cool, considering there will soon be a billion!
I would definitely say that it would overpower his love for Bella, and things then might have some semblance of normalcy, but we shall never know for certain…maybe Jacob would have defied all imprinting laws had he imprinted on some mall/park girl, but I'm thinking probably not. Would have been interesting, though. 🙂
You're posts just keep getting better! I think that it would be a Sam& leah situation only intensified. I mean he would obviously be in love with the imprintee, but just like Sam he would still love the other girl. Now that I think about it, I think the poor guy would be ripped apart. He has so much love for bella, but then there would be that other girl that he also has immense feelings for. But ultimitely I think that imprinting would finally give Jacob somewhere to be besides by bella, so he can really give getting over her a decent try.
That's an interesting question, as usual. Well, I think that if Jacob imprinted on a random girl, it might have been more powerful that his love for Bella. For instance, when Jake suggested that Quil could date other girls while waiting for Claire to grow up, this latter said that he CAN'T even consider it, because he doesn't see the girls anymore (or something like that, it's in French, so I don't have the exact quote :)).
But I think Jake would still go to see Bella because she remains his best friend. Maybe it would have been easier for him to accept Bella's love for Edward, and her choice to keep the baby. The whole thing would have made sense, as Bella said (or something like that, see my previous remark above) (:
Knowing what happens, and it strengthens my theory, I think that the “imprintee” will prio. 1, and Bella prio. 2, since she is his best friens. Although the “imprintee” probably becomes your best friend. Hm. Sharing anyone?
No, seriously, I think that Bella och Jacob's BFF-love is strong enough, that they will be around each other forever 🙂
Okay want to say something else. So I think jake would be confused at first a bit, but would soon be very happy to find his soulmate, and to be over bella. I think that they would still stay very close though.
Many of my *favorite* parts in Twilight are little tiny moments. Like in the first book, when Edward tells Bella how long he's been 17, and she's so satisfied that she's finally getting some answers. You have yet to read most of my favorite moments in Breaking Dawn, but one of them is definitely the moment where Edward throws Jacob the car keys. There's so much understanding in that split second. Actually ANY moment where Edward communicates with someone as a result of something he's “read” – I love.
To answer your question – I believe the imprinting IS more powerful than any previous feelings….
…and I know that you awarded the Summer School passes already, but if there's ANY chance that the winner is unable to make it to Forks, I'd be willing to help out and attend in their place 😉
The person he would imprint with would become his main focus. Look at Quil and how Claire is his main focus in life. He would still see Bella, but only as a friend.
Just have to say that I always look forward to reading your chapter summaries. You crack me up each time!!
Well, there's already a character called Mary and that would be awkward.
I take it your name is Mary. Sorry Mary, you're dead out of luck.
Kaleb,
I think that Jacob would never really LEAVE Bella for there lives are too intertwined after everything that happened in the past 3 stories. The whole lost souls thing was too much and Jacob came back in the earlier books so I truly believe they are meant to be lifelong friends.
i think that jake wouldnt leave bella alone. he would introduce one of the mall girls to her, and i think bella would be jealous and happy that jake finally found the person he was supposed to be with and she couldnt hurt anymore. i would hope jake would come back to bella. it would be so sweet. 🙂
I think if jacob were to imprint with another girl, he would still love bella, but it would be put on the back burner if you know what I mean. I think of it as a widow getting married again. moving on.I don't think he could leave her, no matter what happened.
Well, I agree with everyone else. 🙂
Jacob's imprinting love would be way stronger than this love he has for Bella. But I don't think he'd leave her if he imprinted. Well, he'd stop being in love with her, but he wouldn't leave and never come back. Because, they're still best friends, right? Why would he leave his best friend just because he's got his soulmate now?
And really, the only reason he should leave right now, is because he's already hung up on Bella, so he shouldn't stick around. But if he's got his own love, I think it'd be alright for him to stay and help Bella throughout this err.. hardship of hers.
Huh. Maybe I should stop rambling now.x)
But you have to read the next chapter! You can't just stop now! 😀
Ewww good luck with the next chapter. If you think the fountain of blood is bad…
Keep reading, Kaleb!!!!!!! And please don't forget about the whole not-snacking-while-reading-BD thing. Good idea.
I think if Jacob imprinted on some “mall girl”, he would spend most of his time with this girl, but will also remain close with Bella because they are best friends.
I think if you asked him, he would have said that even if he imprinted, he would never have gotten over Bella. However, like with Sam, no matter how much you love someone, once you imprint, you have found your soul mate. Therefore, in my mind, the love you had for the other person almost seems like nothing compared to the adoration and love you feel for the “imprintee”. If he had imprinted on someone else, like a mall girl, he would have still loved Bella, but I think it would have been more of the sibling-love that Bella feels for him. I don't think Bella and Jacob could ever have fully separated and left the other one alone. There is a lot of history between them and their friendship has gone through a lot, making it stronger.
First off, that is one beautiful car, despite who drives it.
I don't think he would forget Bella, not by a long shot, but he woudn't love her anymore. Just think of Sam and Emily. Sam really did love Leah, but now he can't. Simple as that.

#1 – For your Q for the Comments: YES, but it is hard to say this unbiasedly… I can't say more.
#2 – (Not relevant but interesting) Stephenie used only 1-word chapter titles in THE HOST, and they all end in -ed. But I think her long titles (or Jacob's, rather) in this chapter are quite humorous.
#3 – Are you going to do a BlogTV while you are in Forks???
MEGA LULZ! also, that car is made of awesome, as is jacob, so it works.
It would be great if Jake imprinted on some chick at the mall who is on vacation from a remote-still-welsh-speaking part of Wales and just packed up and moved there with her, never to be seen or heard from (at least not in a language most of us would understand) again. That would really make my day seeing how immature and clingy he is….too bad we aren't that lucky.
It's true about that car. Maybe the cullens really aren't all that great looking, maybe Bella is just distracted by the brilliance of their cars. (i know this doesn't really work). lol. Anyway…. Well see here is my problem with your question. We are given two examples on COMPLETELY different ends to work with.
On one side of the example spectrum we have Sam & Leah & Emily. Now Sam left Leah just fine, he didn't really care about her at all. But on the other side we have Bella & Jacob & Edward. Bella still leaves the one she WOULD have been with if the world was all happy and normal, BUT she still feels her love for jacob. She wants the life she would have had. The only thing stopping her is the pain she felt without Edward. So I think that Jacob would always have feelings for Bella, but with both of them having their lovey-dovey person that would fade over time for both of them.
Imprinting trumps all else. It's the feeling of being tailor made for each other. There's still the option of choice, though, but why wouldn't one choose the perfect person? I wouldn't think Jake would forget about Bella or not want to be her friend if he imprinted on one of those mall girls.
(On an unrelated note: HA! Incorrect use of “who” in the written in Jacob line. Whom I still love, would be correct. Yes, SCORE! I'm not usually a grammar nazi [I am not capitalizing that for two reasons], but I'm not a published author.)
lol. good question. keep reading. o.0
I love the long titles!
I was sad when they go back to one or two words. -_-
Another thing I noticed about Jacob's chapters is that he doesn't have a Table of Contents!
This also made me sad. I want to see all of his chapter titles on one page.
On an unrelated note, you should put the 3rd pic that is on this page as your author photo!
That would be hilarious!
There's a character called Mary?
No, wait. I know who you mean,
I think if Jacob imprinted, he would still be Bella's friend. He would only hang around in that way.
Kaleb, I know you must be a little tired of me defending Jacob, but… I'm a bit disappointed you didn't say anything about the amount of pain Jacob feels in this chapter.
“I don't have anything left”
Jacob has given everything he has for Bella, and even for Edward. Edward knows it:
“I know how much you have given”
I expected you to say something about it… Not just about the expensive car, the long titles, etc. Well, you said something… You said he was kind of a masochist. Ugh… Do you really think he's going to find his perfect girl, his soulmate, just because he wants to? Those kind of things happen. You can't go look for them. What do you expect him to do? What would YOU do?
About your question, he would love his imprintee, not Bella. That's what happens when you imprint.
His imprintee is closer than he thinks!! HAHAHA I'm cryptical and mystical!!
Also I think he would just think of Bella as a friend. He would love her but not be in love with her! You can sorta see that with Sam and Leah. At times you can tell that he still loves Leah just not the same way he did before Emily!
You completely underestimate the power of imprinting to even doubt whether it would separate Jacob from Bella. Of course he'd always remember their friendship and close bond, but the broken heart would be immediately replaced. Think of the power that Quil's and Sam's imprinting had against all reason and logic.
(And I agree–Jacob just likes to wallow. Otherwise he'd hunt down the magic until he found it.)
jake would be able to walk away from bella in a heart beat if he imprinted on 'a mall girl'…he would be perfectly happy with exchanging christmas cards once a year…bella on the other hand would miss him terribly BUT i think she would be fine because she got her happy ending…ish (now she's beinge eaten by her own baby) and jake would have his so they would both be happy….
Exactly. Once the wolves imprint. That. Is. It. Period.
They can do nothing but totally worship that person, in whatever way that person wants or needs to be worshiped.
That person becomes the center of their world, and everyone else that was important to them before then becomes secondary. They still love them, but the love for their imprint totally trumps it.
Sam and Emily are the prime example.
Sam still loves Leah in a way. But only because of the love he had for her before. He feels very guilty for what he did to her, and how it made her so bitter. He feels protective of her still. He still calls her “Le Le”, like he did when they were a couple.
But his total self is totally committed to Emily, and he can do nothing and would do nothing to in any way hurt her.
He can still have Leah in his life, because he loves her in an affectionate way, but she is no threat whatsoever to his bond with Emily.
Quil is the same. He knows that he has to wait at least 17 or 18 years for Claire and him to be together “that way”, or it's possible it may not ever happen “that way”. He does not care in the least. He has no desire to date girls his age, even though he knows that Claire would probably understand. He cannot even SEE a girl his age in that way. Claire is his everything, and whatever she needs from him, he will be, and all the other girls in the world are just not an option for him ever.
Jake and Bella have a bond that can never be broken. That bond may change. It may become more healthy for both of them, but it will always be there. Their friendship cannot go away. They are family more than many blood family members are. They are meant to be in each others' lives in one way or another.
ThankGod that we aren't “lucky” in that way. Jake is AWESOMENESS itself!
What would the Saga be without him?
I know, Alba.
I feel sooo sad for Jacob in this part of the book. For Edward, too. They are both actually starting to feel compassion and a kinship with each other, because they are both going through the pain of losing Bella.
Thank you for defending Jake all the time. I try to defend him everytime I can, too.
It hurts me when people say ugly things about him
Wolfgirls Rock!
Exactly!
No he's not wallowing. He just realizes that his soulmate could be anyone in the World, and his imprinting is not something he can force.
According to the legends, some of the wolves NEVER imprint. In fact, they thought it was a pretty rare thing!
I love the chapter titles… They really let you into Jacob's mind, I think. He's not as direct and to the point as Bella, whose books only have 1 word chapter titles. It's a neat change.
Anyway, I would say Jake would absolutely without a second thought move on if he imprinted on someone other than Bella. The fact is, if he was going to imprint on Bella, he would have the first time he saw her after becoming a werewolf. Since he didn't then, he never will. And since he hasn't imprinted on anyone else, he's still holding on, hoping for Bella even though he can't have her. You always want what you can't have, it seems. Anyway, imprinting is a powerful thing. It took Sam away from Leah, even though he really loved her, and still does. But when he imprinted on Emily, it was as Jake described – “gravity moves.” It was no longer gravity that held him to the earth, it was Emily. And no matter how much he loved Leah – someone he was actually with – and no matter that he still loves Leah, he could not be with anyone other than Emily. It would be the same for Jake. If he imprinted on someone, that would be it. He would always feel affection for Bella, but he would have to be with the girl he imprinted on or he would never be happy. Even if Bella by some fluke said she did want him. Jake could not be with her. And as for whomever he imprinted on – she would have more of a choice than Jake, but it is again as Jake said – why wouldn't she choose him? He would be her other half, and her perfect match. She would never be as happy with anyone as she would with him.
I really used to see imprinting as a relatively negative thing, seeing as the “imprinter” has no choice in the matter, but I really don't see it so much that way anymore. Because even if the imprinter has no real choice, he's still happy. Maybe something negative happens in the process, but in the end, he's not happy with anyone other than the imprintee either. I don't know… Maybe I just accept it now more than I did.
To be honest, I found myself hoping that Jake would imprint as I was reading. He is probably the most unhappy he as ever been in his life as he watches the girl he loves with his mortal enemy, pregnant with his half vampire, half human child that is slowly killing her. He'd have a little relief if he imprinted. Yes, he'd still see Bella as a friend and it would still be hard for him to see all of this, but not as bad because he wouldn't be IN love anymore – he'd just love her as a friend. That's how I saw it anyway. 🙂
I think Jake would be able not to leave her (they'd still be really good friends), but to stop thinking of her in a romantic way. I would compare it to Sam-Leah-Emily.
Forgot to talk about the titles!! Anyhoo I think it is great not only because you are seeing a difference between him and Bella but also because of two things (the second one is better but kinda related to the first one)
Firstly! The titles are a mini summary of his feelings for that chapter.
Secondly! They are further getting into his mind. He may not always say or show or think for that matter what he is feeling but the titles will tell you.
And Thirdly! (ok I lied three things) They are good for a laugh. Until you read the rest of the chapter and see how sad it is.
This chapter was one of my least favorites maybe in the entire series. I like that we finally got a reaction that made a lot of sense out of Jake but it made me cry. Then the whole concept of it was sad. He was so desperate to imprint and get away from the feelings he was having about Bella and Edward and the baby that was went to a park to try and find his imprintee. The thing is its not likely and also how would that work? If he did imprint in the park, does he just go up to the girl and say “Hey. I'm a werewolf and you are my soul mate.” I mean that's not creepy at all. And he can't just give her his phone number cause she might not call. IDK haha
ummm just keep reading, you'll figure it out 🙂
as you may know (seeing i comment on almost every post) i never read the previous comments, so sorry if i repeat.
anyway, i think that if Jacob were to imprint on another girl, he feelings for Bella would disappear. He wouldn't be torn up inside over loving her–but not being able to have her–because the imprinting would make him head over heels for that lucky, lucky girl. I mean, Jacob would still love Bella in a BFF way, but not in a romantic way.
I so want that car… Anywho, I think that Jake will always love Bella, but if he really did imprint I think this imprintee would still play a big role in his life.
your captions are hilarious as usual. My 16 year old son cracked up over the caption on the car. Too priceless.
I'm not going to give my opinion on this particular question because it would spoil what's coming. Considering what you get queasy over, I”m looking forward to see how you react to what happens when the baby is born and the following results.
Your captions are hilarious!!! Love it!!! Keep reading, I'm sure you'll see how it gets better.
